Over the past decade, the world has been shaken by over 100,000 terrorist attacks. Moreover, in some countries, terrorist attacks of various scales are almost daily committed. The Institute of Economics and Peace, in collaboration with the University of Maryland, compiled ranking of countries in the world by level of terrorism.
The study involved 158 countries. The terrorist threat index was calculated based on 4 indicators: the number of terrorist attacks in 2012, the number of dead and injured, the amount of material damage.
10. Philippines
Over the past year, 125 terrorist attacks took place in the country, in which 120 people were killed and 213 were injured. The most high-profile incidents occurred in the spring of 2012 at the height of the tourist season in the Philippines.
9.Russia
In 2012, 182 terrorist attacks took place in Russia, in which 431 people were injured and 159 people died. The overwhelming majority of incidents occurred on the territory of Dagestan, Ingushetia and Chechnya. More than 90 terrorist attacks were prevented by the special services.
8. Thailand
In 2012, 173 terrorist attacks took place in the country, in which 142 people were killed and 427 injured. The whole world was covered by footage of the evacuation of people after the explosion in a hotel in the south of the country in March 2012.
7. Nigeria
During the year, 168 terrorist attacks occurred in Nigeria. 437 people died, 614 were injured. The loudest incidents were the explosions in Christian churches, which were the result of discord between representatives of the Muslim and Christian communities.
6. Somalia
In the past year, 175 terrorist attacks occurred in Somalia, killing 294 people, injuring 493. Terrorist attacks in this African country occur several times a week. Several extremist groups operate in Somalia at once.
5. Yemen
In 2012, 113 terrorist attacks occurred in Yemen, 454 people were killed and 415 injured. The largest incidents were an explosion during a rehearsal for a military parade in May and a terrorist attack during a funeral ceremony in August last year.
4. India
Last year, 529 terrorist attacks took place on the territory of the country, in which 402 people were killed and 667 injured. The most bloody terrorist attack was on August 15 at the height of the Independence Day celebrations.
3. Afghanistan
In the country that closes the top three in the rating of countries in terms of terrorism, in 2012 there were 364 incidents in which 1293 people died and 1882 were injured. In Afghanistan, the terrorist threat comes mostly from Taliban activists.
2.Pakistan
Over the past year, 910 terrorist attacks took place in the country, in which 1468 people were killed and 2459 injured. The territory of Pakistan on the border with Afghanistan, which is practically not controlled by the authorities, can be considered a hotbed of terrorism.
1 Iraq
The highest level of terrorism was recorded in Iran, where 1,228 terrorist attacks took place in a year. Killed - 1798 people, injured - 4905. Participation in a terrorist attack in this country is punishable by death, however, despite this, it is Iraq that is considered the center of international terrorism. In addition to the notorious al-Qaeda, there are about 3 dozen extremist associations operating on the territory of the state.
