Why is the Passport Index so important

Passport Index 2019The Passport Index is the most accurate measure of the accessibility of residents of different states to other countries. It goes beyond just ranking passports, and provides a detailed picture of your freedom of movement, including the following information:

  • which countries you can access with a specific type of visa;
  • how the “weight” of your passport has changed over the past 14 years;
  • by what parameters does your passport compare with other passports;
  • why your passport has one or another level of access;
  • obtaining which additional passports can improve your mobility.

Henley Passport is the only passport rating based on information provided by the International Air Transport Association, supplemented by extensive in-house research, backed up by expert commentary and updated regularly throughout the year, making it the most reliable and trustworthy index of its kind.

  3. French and German passports ranked third, offering access to 188 countries worldwide.
  4. European countries - Denmark, Finland, Sweden and Italy - “in close quarters but not offended” took fourth place. The passports of these countries allow visa-free access to 187 countries.
  5. With access to 186 countries, the passports of Luxembourg and Spain ranked fifth.
  6. European countries - Austria, Portugal, Norway, Netherlands, Switzerland - also performed well, sharing the sixth line of the Passport Index with the United Kingdom and the United States of America. At the same time, the UK dropped from 4th to 6th place, and the United States dropped from 5th to 6th place, giving visa-free or simplified visa access to 185 destinations.
  7. Belgium, Canada, Ireland and Greece jointly rank 7th, providing their citizens with access to 184 destinations around the world.
  8. The Czech Republic is single-handedly ranked eighth in terms of a powerful passport index with access to 183 countries.
  9. Malta remains firmly in ninth position, allowing visa-free access to 182 countries.
  10. Australia, Iceland and New Zealand share the 10th position with visa-free travel to 181 countries.

The largest climbers in the report were China, Colombia, Tuvalu and the United Arab Emirates, all up five places from the previous year.

“Historical data from the Passport Index over the past 14 years shows an overwhelming global trend towards visa openness,” said Christian H. Kälin, Chairman of Henley & Partners, adding that while isolationist sentiment has risen in some parts of the world, most countries are committed to cooperation and mutually beneficial agreements.

The countries with the worst passports in the world

Russia's place in the rating of passports in 2019

Russia in the rating of passports 2019Our country took 48th place in Henley Passport. Russians can visit 119 countries without a visa or in a simplified regime. Of course, this is significantly less than the leaders of the rating, but not so bad, given that the list included 104 states in total.

Commenting on the 2019 Henley Passport report, Froilan Malit, Gulf Labor Markets, Migration and Population Program Officer and Research Fellow at the Center for International Education and Leadership, said: “In general, international migration is not only helping to stabilize economic growth in the Asia-Pacific region, but and enables many labor-supplying countries in South and Southeast Asia to maintain sustainable economic growth even in times of crisis. ”

Experts expect that neither the US nor EU member states will be able to substantially revise their current visa policies, while countries in other parts of Europe, as well as Asia and the Middle East, are likely to negotiate new agreements to abolish visas with diplomatic allies.
