The daring action is the loudest escape in British history. The Maze prison was considered one of the most reliable in Europe, however, 38 members of the Irish Republican army overcame two five-meter barriers and broke free. Of the 38 fugitives, 18 were caught in the early days, and several more were later found in the United States.
6. Pascal Payet's escape, 2007
Pascal went to prison for a murder committed during a robbery of a collection vehicle. He twice managed to carry out not very successful escapes, each time returning to jail. However, in 2007, Payet's accomplices hijacked a helicopter in Cannes, on which they landed right on the roof of the prison and literally "recaptured" the prisoner from the guards. The helicopter was later found on the Mediterranean coast, but no trace of the daring gang was found.

Convicted of arson, Shotard was brought to serve his sentence in London's Pentonville prison. However, the prisoner did not even reach his cell.
