Some film critics argue that the various top and bottom ratings of films do more harm than good, due to the inevitable bias of their compiler (or compilers). On the other hand, movie listings can be a fun way to "gauge" the temperature of today's film culture, and also offer an opportunity to discover and discuss films that few people knew about before.
Last year, the BBC polled scores of critics to identify the 100 most popular US-made films. And it turned out that only six films released after 2000 made it to the rating. This year the BBC decided to find the pearls of the "new classic". These are films made in the last 16 years and are likely to stand the test of time.
BBC Culture's editors polled 177 critics from every corner of the world except Antarctica to compile a list of the best films of the 21st century (perhaps the South Pole is too cold to worry about Spirited Away better than WALL-E). It is noteworthy that the top 100 also includes films created by Russian and Asian directors, for example, "Leviathan" by Andrey Zvyagintsev and "Killer" by Hou Xiaosian.

While the list is curious in itself, the statistics on the films included are also interesting. For example, the largest number of films were released in 2012 and 2013, the characters in more than half of the films speak English, and only 12 films on the list were created by female directors, despite the fact that 31% of critics surveyed by the BBC were women. Some types of genres are more widely represented than others. For example, there are many dramas and action films. Comedies and documentaries, on the other hand, seem rare, as do superhero films, despite the feeling that they are the main focus of Hollywood in recent years.
It goes without saying that this list, like all others like it, is subjective. There is no objective and universally accepted way of assessing the quality of a film, and each critic looks at a particular picture through their own complex and very personal set of criteria. Therefore, if you are unhappy with the fact that a film has made it (or, on the contrary, did not make it) in this top 100, do not rush to be indignant. Just mentally cross out one of the tapes (or several) and write your own there.
