This is the European Committee for Independent Crash Testing of Cars, which evaluates both active and passive safety.

10. BMW 5 Series
The car in this series has been awarded five stars, including an impressive 81 percent pedestrian safety. According to Euro NCAP experts, the car has shown good all-round performance in crash protection thanks to its new platform, body and safety features. The BMW 5 Series is equipped with a variety of driver assistance systems that significantly reduce the risk of accidents. However, the model is one of most resold in the first year after purchase.
9. Audi Q5
To achieve a five-star safety rating, a vehicle must perform well in four key areas, namely:
- protection of the driver and adult passengers;
- protection of child passengers;
- pedestrian protection;
- road safety assistance. That is, the car must have appropriate devices.
The Audi Q5 performed well (93%) in the adult safety test. This test evaluates: the level of protection against whiplash injury and the degree of safety in frontal and side impacts.
8. Land Rover Discovery
The protection of children in a car depends on three aspects:
- the protection provided by child restraint systems for frontal and side impacts;
- the possibility of placing child restraints of various sizes and designs in the vehicle;
- availability of devices for the safe transport of children in the car.
The new Land Rover Discovery achieved 80% efficiency in this area.
7. Toyota C-HR
In seventh place in the ranking of the safest family cars is reliable car Toyota C-HR for superior pedestrian protection. This protection is determined based on the design of the front of the vehicle, namely the bonnet, windshield, front bonnet and bumper. Auto scored 76% in this area. And the level of effectiveness of protection of adult passengers was 95%.
6. Volvo S90 / V90

The driver of the Volvo S90 / V90 has assistive technologies such as electronic stability control, seat belt reminder, automatic braking and lane keeping assist. Volvo is the only car to be awarded five stars on the 2017 Safest Family Cars list. All other cars were tested in 2016.
5. Audi Q2
The compact crossover with the Audi badge will always be popular, despite the high price tag. The Audi Q2 protects adult passengers and driver very well (protection efficiency level - 93%) and slightly worse, but still good - young passengers (86%).
4. Ford Edge
Experts testing the Ford Edge noted that this car has excellent technologies for ensuring road safety. In terms of efficiency (89%), they are second only to the leader in this area - Volvo S90 / V90.
3. Hyundai Ioniq
Five stars for safety were awarded by Euro NCAP to all versions of the Hyundai Ioniq, including the electric vehicle and hybrid (PHEV). This Korean car is equipped with many safety systems, including lane departure warning and blind spot detection, automatic braking and adaptive cruise control.
2. Suzuki Ignis
In 2016 Euro NCAP introduced a new “double rating” system. It means that the default rating is based on a standard vehicle safety check, which is mandatory for models sold in all 28 EU countries. And additional tests are being conducted to determine how a car with an enhanced safety package will perform. Suzuki Ignis as standard proved to be the middle peasant among the safest brands of family cars, "Earning" only three stars... However, the top-tier SZ5 earned a five-star rating.
1. Mercedes-Benz E-Class
It would be strange if a luxurious and well-made sedan like the Mercedes-Benz E-Class did not receive the maximum five-star safety rating according to Euro NCAP. It provides 95% safety for the driver and adult passengers.
