Biathlon is one of the most spectacular and popular sports, reminiscent of the times when our not so distant ancestors were engaged in hunting and war. In our rating of the Russian Biathlon Union 2018-2019 - 10 best Russian biathletes, both men and women, and a complete list in the form of a table.
The best female biathletes in Russia for 2019
5. Evgeniya Pavlova
A young athlete from Central Russia has become a prize-winner of junior competitions more than once, but she went to the “adult” championship only now. And to everyone's surprise in the sprint came the eighth, despite the difficult terrain conditions for her. Evgenia is optimistic about the future - as she said after a successful competition, the World Cup turned out to be much less scary than she imagined. She was among the finalists of the first stage, which turned out to be a pleasant surprise both for the Russian audience and for herself. Unfortunately, she could not participate in the races in Nove Mesto due to health problems.
4. Svetlana Mironova
She was born in a small village in the Tomsk region, and started skiing at the age of eight. The young skier showed such talent and will to win that the coach even took her to competitions at his own expense, since the girl's family was not rich. Since childhood, Svetlana dreamed of being like the German Olympic champion Magdalena Neuner, and took over from her one of the main advantages of an athlete - an open and full of life smile.
Like Evgenia Pavlova, Svetlana performed a lot and successfully in junior races, as well as in the championships of Russia and Europe. According to the results of last year, she was recognized as the most talented newcomer biathlete. And the results of the World Cup in 2018-2019. this high assessment is only confirmed. In the sprint race, she showed better results than the rest of the athletes of the Russian team, ahead of even the star Irina Starykh. True, the athlete herself is unhappy with herself - she says that she could have performed better without allowing "offensive blunders".
3. Anastasia Morozova
The appearance of Anastasia in the team came as a surprise to her. Although the results at last year's IBU Cup, where she took the lead in the overall standings, were very successful for the athlete, she did not shine in the junior stage, yielding top positions to her more prominent rivals. However, the title of two-time champion at the Russian World Cup in 2017 made Morozov pay attention to the Russian sports authorities. And the brilliant victories at the IBU Cup made her take to the World Cup. Her debut was in Nove Mesto (Czech Republic), and it can hardly be called extraordinary - the girl took 38th place. The athlete herself is delighted, she says that she is overwhelmed with emotions, and everything around "generally flies away."
2. Evgeniya Yurlova-Perkht
The St. Petersburg athlete, multiple medalist of the Russian championships, returned to the World Cup only this year. Previously, she participated in two World Cups, in 2007-2008 and 2011-2012, but she never won prizes, although she was stable in the top ten. The doping scandal bypassed Eugene, although rumors, of course, circulated, but were not confirmed. Nevertheless, the international career had to be forgotten for six long years.
Evgenia was worried, but her father supported her both mentally and physically - after all, he had been preparing his daughter for a sports career since childhood and personally trained her. And he was right - at the 2015 World Championships, the Russian biathlete triumphantly won, never missing the entire 15 kilometers distance and beating her opponent by 28 seconds.
Evgenia's return to the World Cup was successful - at the second stage she came third. In terms of endurance, Yurlova-Perkht is still the best among Russian athletes. If by the third stage they began to sharply surrender, then Evgenia rushes forward with the regularity and accuracy of a clockwork, exactly like a year ago.
1. Irina Starykh
The best biathlete in Russia does not like to give interviews to journalists, so little is known about her life. Unlike other athletes and female athletes, she is not on the Vkontakte social network or on Instragram. We only know about it what is contained in official documents.
The first Russian biathlete was born in Kurgan; unlike other girls, it was not her parents who brought her to the sport, but her interest in biathlon. Irina went to the section on her own, and there she met the outstanding Russian biathlete Yana Romanova (alas, at the moment she had already completed her sports career). Already at the junior performances Irina's results were very good, and at the championship in Bulgaria she won first place. Then came the victories in the World Championship - Irina got into the Russian national team almost immediately. She took bronze, and at the next championship - silver. It seemed that we were watching the start of a promising career, but the unexpected happened. An illegal doping substance was found in Irina's samples. And she was disqualified for three years. The Starykh traditionally did not give an interview and did not comment on what had happened.
Her return to the big sport was triumphant - at the World Championships she took fourth place, and at the European Championships she took gold, showing 100% accuracy. Alas, for Irina the current world championship is not as successful as before. Although she walked in the top ten for a long time, however, she began to get tired and the last, third stage passed on the last remnants of energy and strength, sharply reducing her speed.
The best male biathletes in Russia for 2019
5. Anton Babikov
Anton was born into a sports family, and inherited from his parents a love for physical education and the will to win. Although his parents did not insist on sports as a career, Anton's potential turned out to be so high that the section coach advised him to send him to "big sport". As a result, an excellent athlete was born, who won his first medal (bronze) at the European Championship at the age of 23.
Anton is especially good at pursuing a mode that many athletes dislike for its low cost / benefit ratio. Although Anton is very good at him and consistently won awards, last year's Olympics in Pyongyang turned out to be so unsuccessful for him that he tried to avoid contact with journalists, simply running away from them. Jumped over the fence and was like that. Let's see what the results will be for him at the current World Championship in 2019.
4.Sergey Korastylev
Best of all, one of the best biathletes of the Russian national team works in a team or a pair with women biathletes. For example, if at the 2015 World Championships he took seventh place in the pursuit, he won a landslide victory in a team with three more Russian athletes. And already in December 2018, he, together with Anastasia Morozova, won first place for Russia.
3. Evgeny Garanichev
To some extent, Eugene got into biathlon by accident. In a small village in the Perm region, there was simply no other sports section, except for skiing. Therefore, the parents, so that the child does not hang out unattended, sent him there after his older brother - and they did not lose. The child turned out to be exceptionally talented, at the world championship he won first place, and at the world junior championship he was second. However, there were few conditions for the development of skiing in the Perm region, so in 2008 the young athlete moved to the Siberians, to the Tyumen biathlon team. And already two years later he became a prize-winner of the Izhevsk rifle. Such a victory is an automatic ticket to the World Cup.
At the current World Championships, the best biathletes in Russia had two problems:
- The scandal with the Austrian police, who suddenly raided the headquarters of Russian athletes and charged them with doping (despite the fact that the Russian team has regularly undergone doping tests over the past few years without any problems).
- Aggressive position of Czech fans.
However, they did not prevent Eugene from taking third place in the mass start. The athlete himself says that the reason for the victory is complete concentration on "work" and getting rid of unnecessary thoughts.
2. Matvey Eliseev
With dad, a biathlete and mom, a skier, could Matvey connect his life with anything other than sports? The family preferred expensive, extra-class sports equipment to low bourgeois joys, so the upbringing and training of the future athlete began from a very early age. Already at a young age, Matvey showed great promise. He repeatedly became a prize-winner of Russian competitions, and for the first time when he entered the world junior biathlon championship, he did not lose his head and received a bronze medal. Since then, the Muscovite's career has developed steadily - in 2016 he received a gold medal, and a year later he became a medalist at the World War Games. Fortunately, the athlete's doping scandal was spared, and he continued to do what he loved.
However, Matvey's business at the 2019 World Cup is not going well. On the second lap, he dropped to thirtieth place. The athlete himself explains this by the fact that his ski was buried in a snowdrift and broke, and the spare ski was disgusting. The stress caused by this misses - in total Matvey missed the target eight times. For this reason or for some other reason, he did not get into the relay team. However, the athlete himself is ready to correct his mistakes and work on himself, and wishes victory to his colleagues.
1. Alexander Loginov
At the moment, Alexander, if not the main hope of Russian biathlon, then in public opinion is very much like her. From early childhood, the best Russian biathlete of 2019 loved skiing and dreamed of being like his idol, the outstanding and exceptionally talented Norwegian athlete Ole Bjoerndalen. His sports career developed rapidly - at the age of 13 he went to the section, a year later he became a candidate for master of sports, and at the age of 18 he participated in the competition at the World Championships in Sweden in the junior class. And he performed brilliantly, since then becoming one of the recognized leaders among world-class biathletes.
However, doping scandals hit Loginov as well. A prohibited drug was found in the athlete's blood, so he was removed from the competition until 2016, and the year of previous victories was invalidated. The train of resentments and suspicions behind Loginov still lasts, and one very emotional French athlete called the victory of the Russian in one of the stages of the 2019 World Cup "a shame" and demanded an apology.

The popularity of biathlon is a guarantee that the competition among athletes is very high. The first 20-30 places are located almost close to each other, within one minute. To win, an athlete must be in outstanding physical condition and shoot great - more competition and less margin for error. And the Russian team has more and more problems - even despite the triumphant return of the excellent athlete Loginov and the good results of Garanichev and Eliseev.
