Drug addiction, Putin and "humiliation of the state": what influenced the ratings of Zelensky and Poroshenko before the second round

The decline in the popularity of Petro Poroshenko was largely influenced by both the "dirty" election technologies used by his team and the conversation that took place on the air of the 1 + 1 TV channel. But first things first.

  • Firstly, many Ukrainians were outraged by the posters on which the faces of Petro Poroshenko and Vladimir Putin are placed opposite each other. The inscription on the posters is laconic and reads: “April 21. Decisive choice! "

Promotional poster: Poroshenko opposite Putin

It turns out that anyone who does not vote for Poroshenko is automatically considered a supporter of Putin.

  • Secondly, supporters of Petro Poroshenko began to accuse Vladimir Zelensky of drug addiction. And they emphasize the fact that he did not take tests at an independent company, but at the Eurolab clinic, which belongs to a friend of Zelensky's, Andrei Palchevsky. Currently, the topic of "Zelensky the drug addict" is being actively promoted with the help of leaflets, posters, inscriptions on T-shirts, etc.
  • Thirdly, Petro Poroshenko called Volodymyr Zelenskiy a “puppet” of the oligarch Igor Kolomoisky and although he did not openly call him a drug addict, he stressed during his speeches that a person suffering from drug addiction should not become the Ukrainian president and supreme commander in chief. Thus, transparently hinting at their opponent.
  • Fourth, during the broadcast of the Right to Power program, Poroshenko unexpectedly appeared in the studio of the 1 + 1 TV channel, ostensibly to have a discussion with Zelensky.

However, his opponent was not in the country at that time, he flew to France to meet with President Emmanuel Macron. Poroshenko recalled this by Zelensky himself, calling on the air. Two candidates for the post of head of the country entered into a skirmish, the point at which was put by Zelensky himself, hanging up.

Some viewers found the tone Zelenskiy used to address Poroshenko as humiliating for the head of state. In the opinion of others, it was in such a tone that one should speak with a person who had not hesitated to throw mud at an opponent before.

  • Fifth, the actions of Poroshenko himself and his guards (for example, ripping off the cap from the girl's head, knocking out mobile phones for “inconvenient” questions about the journalist and video blogger Anatoly Shariy) turn voters away from him.

Zelensky, although he openly admitted that he “does not respect” Poroshenko, does not allow himself to make statements that can defame the honor and dignity of the current president of Ukraine. This only adds to his popularity points among ordinary Ukrainians, who see the contrast between the actions of the campaign headquarters of both candidates.

  • Zelensky's ratings are also positively influenced by the high level of disillusionment among Ukrainians with the current government.
  • In addition, some voters perceive Zelensky not only as a successful showman, but as a person who played a good and honest president in the Servant of the People series.

Petro Poroshenko's only hope for raising the rating remains the debate with Volodymyr Zelensky, which is scheduled for today, April 19.

Who will become the President of Ukraine: expert opinions

Most of both Russian and Ukrainian experts believe that on April 21, Ukrainians will make their choice in favor of Vladimir Zelensky.

For example, Ukrainian political scientist Pyotr Oleshchuk said in an interview with the Slovo i Delo newspaper that if sociology is to be believed, the result is already predetermined. And there is no visible opportunity to change this situation.

According to political scientist Mikhail Pogrebinsky, the miscalculations of Poroshenko's campaign headquarters in recent years are associated with the disastrous results of the first round. Pogrebinsky called the situation "hopeless" for Poroshenko, and the situation with a large margin of Zelensky is the result of Poroshenko's actions over the past five years.

The Kremlin has not commented on its likes and dislikes, but Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said he would like to watch the debate between the two Ukrainian candidates. He thinks it will be "an interesting sight."
