American magazine Wards Auto has released a new version of its annual list of the best engines in the world... In 2018, there were 10 winners, including 4-, 6- and 8-cylinder engines, as well as electric and hybrid drives.
This year, the list is dominated by mass-market automakers and electric car makers. The only luxury brands that make the top 10 best engines are Jaguar and Infiniti. Also, there are no German marks on the list.
The Wards Auto experts evaluated the motors on such parameters as power, torque, comparative performance, noise, fuel economy and innovation.
Here are the top 10 best motors of 2018.
10. Chevrolet Bolt
Engine: 150 kW.
WardsAuto editors praised the Bolt hatchback's drivetrain for its long range (322 kilometers), 360 Nm of torque and the ability to accelerate from 0 to 100 kilometers in just 7 seconds. The maximum speed that this electric car can develop reaches 145 kilometers per hour.
9. Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid
Engine: 3.6-liter, Pentastar V6.
This hybrid minivan has a 3.6-liter gasoline engine paired with an electric motor. 260 horsepower under the hood accelerates the car to "sotochka" in 7 seconds. Electric traction is used to save fuel, and it turns on even at high speeds. And the gasoline engine turns on when you need to drive up an elevation or overtake someone.
8. Ford F-150
Engine: 2.7-liter, Twin-Turbo EcoBoost V6.
WardsAuto employees were pleasantly surprised by the quiet operation of the engine of the full-size Ford F-150 pickup. “We were in luxury cars that are not as quiet,” said the experts of the publication.
The turbo engine of this car has a power of 325 hp. and 507 Nm of thrust. The pickup can carry loads with a maximum weight of 3855 kg.
7. Ford Mustang GT
Engine: 5-liter DOHC V8.
The refreshed 5-liter V8 from Ford has received expert praise for its excellent fuel economy and amazing performance. Under the hood, this two-door fastback sports coupe has 435 hp. and 541 Nm of torque. The engine is connected to a six-speed manual gearbox. An automatic transmission is available as an option.
6. Honda Clarity Fuel Cell
130 kW electric motor with electric power plant (177 hp).
Combined with superb driving dynamics and quiet operation, this Japanese hydrogen sedan is ready to show its best. It is equipped with fuel cells over 100 kW. They are connected to a single unit with an electric motor and power electronics and are located under the hood. According to the manufacturer, the Honda Clarity Fuel Cell can travel up to 700 km with one hydrogen refueling.
5. Honda Civic Type R
Engine: 2.0 liter, turbocharged VTEC 4 cylinders.
Sports five-door hatchback with 306 hp. and 399 Nm of torque is powered by the most powerful Honda engine ever sold in the United States. Honda Civic Type R accelerates to 270 km / h and overcomes the 100 km / h mark in 5.7 seconds.
4. Infiniti Q50
Engine: 3.0-liter, twin-turbo VR V6.
This beautiful, sporty sedan can accelerate from 0 to 100 km / h in less than five seconds. The power of its twin-turbo engine is 405 hp. at 6400 rpm. Thanks to innovative technologies such as a new direct fuel injection system and reduced mechanical friction, this model has excellent performance.
The same engine is installed in the Infiniti Q60 coupe.And its predecessor VQ 3.7 has won the Wards Auto award 14 times in a row. This is a record among other participants in the ranking of the best engines for cars.
3. Jaguar XF
Engine: Ingenium 2.0-liter, four-cylinder and turbocharged.
Editors at Wards Auto were impressed by the new Ingenium engine developed by Jaguar Land Rover. It is completely made of aluminum and features low fuel consumption and low emission of harmful substances.
Especially the editors of the magazine liked the electro-hydraulic drive of the engine valves and the confident road manners of the car.
The Jaguar XF engine lineup includes two-liter diesel and gasoline engines ranging from 180 to 250 hp.
2. Kia Stinger
Engine: 3.3 liters, twin-turbo V6.
In second place in the selection of the best engines of 2018 is the engine of the Korean Kia Stinger. It runs quietly and smoothly at idle, but is ready to bellow like a big V8 any second when the driver hits the gas. For the Russian market, the 3.3-liter version will only be equipped with a V6 all-wheel drive.
The engine power is 370 hp and the torque is 510 Nm. With such a unit under the hood, the Kia Stinger accelerates to a hundred in 4.9 seconds.
1. Toyota Camry Hybrid
Engine: 2.5-liter, four-cylinder Atkinson cycle.
For the Camry sedan, Toyota has created the perfect symbiosis of an all-new gasoline engine and an electric motor. It uses ultra-light 0w16 grade oil to reduce internal friction and loss. Thanks to the regenerative braking system, excess kinetic energy from the engine recharges the battery and keeps the electronics running. This ensures a high percentage of efficiency.
The Toyota Camry Hybrid, introduced in 2017, has a petrol engine output of 178 hp. and 221 Nm. The electric motor is a little weaker - 120 hp. and 202 Nm. And the total power of the power plant is 211 hp.
