An unspoken Hollywood rule is that every well-thought-out and well-shot film must have an antipode - a movie made solely to “siphon money” from unassuming viewers. Often it exploits a sense of nostalgia or “parasitizes” on better-quality predecessors.
Even most popular actors and actresses no, no, yes, and will act in a similar, frankly disastrous movie.
Want to know which films were the worst in 2019? Then check out this anti-rating, compiled by two well-known Western film critics, authors of Variety magazine - Peter Debrouge and Owen Gliberman.
10. Yesterday
KinoSearch: 6.94 out of 10
IMDB: 6.90 out of 10
Genre: music, fantasy, comedy
Country: UK, Russia, China, Japan
Producer: Danny Boyle
Music: Daniel Pemberton
Duration: 116 minutes
Yesterday is a story about a mediocre musician Jack who suddenly becomes super popular for only one reason: he finds himself in an alternate reality, and the Beatles never existed in it. This means that all of their songs can be performed without fear of claims for copyright infringement.
And while Peter Debroge thinks there is no romantic chemistry in this boring film and the protagonist is an immature jerk, the viewer rating of this film is higher than that of one of the best films of the decade according to Time.
9. Sea of temptation
KinoSearch: 5.90 out of 10
IMDB: 5.30 out of 10
Genre: thriller, drama, detective
Country: UK, USA
Producer: Stephen Knight
Music: Benjamin Wallfish
Duration: 106 minutes
Starring Matthew McConaughey as the captain of a fishing boat and Anne Hathaway as his ex-wife seeking protection from her new husband, the film promises audiences a sinister and interesting mystery.
The problem with "Sea of Temptation" is that the riddle is not so difficult to solve, but "this is the turn" is absolutely ridiculous. This is especially disappointing given that Stephen Knight has proven himself to be a brilliant and daring screenwriter on projects such as Detectives, Taboo, Peaky Blinders and Locke.
8. Lakisha
KinoSearch: no
IMDB: 1.20 out of 10
Genre: comedy
Country: USA
Producer: Jeremy Saville
Music: Brian salter
Duration: 98 minutes
After a white guy was fired from his job at a bar in Detroit where minority and woman complaints filed against him, he released his black woman. That is, he began to pretend to be a dark-skinned radio host. Sounds like crazy? This is because this is one of the worst films of the year.
Jeremy Saville's shot should inspire sympathy for ordinary white people who are now discriminated against almost more than everyone else. Instead, the result is "an offensive, unfiltered and completely unconvincing racial stereotype about sassy African American women."
7. Glass
KinoSearch: 6.42 out of 10
IMDB: 6.70 out of 10
Genre: thriller, drama, fantasy
Country: USA, China
Producer: M. Night Shyamalan
Music: West Dylan Thordson
Duration: 129 minutes
The 2017 Split showed that director M. Night Shyamalan still “can, can, practice good cinema”. It was essentially a sequel to his astonishing 2000 film, Unbreakable. However, "Glass" - the final part of the trilogy - greatly disappointed viewers and critics.
Those who dare to see this picture will have more than two hours of "highly publicized confrontation between the two ends of a shallow puddle," as Peter Debruge called the movie.
“Ultimately, Glass suffers from problems with tempo, consistency and plot,” echoes Samir Amer of The Express Tribune, Pakistan.
But the critic from FilmGamed was the most categorical about this uninteresting film. He called Shyamalan's creation "a dramatic trash wagon that constantly moves on rails to reach a place no one ever wanted to go."
6. Dumbo
KinoSearch: 6.76 out of 10
IMDB: 6.30 out of 10
Genre: fantasy, family
Country: USA, UK, Australia, Canada
Producer: Tim Burton
Music: Danny Elfman
Duration: 112 minutes
It was this film that Peter Debrouge put first in his anti-rating of the most unsuccessful films of 2019. But we still have a selection from Gliberman ahead, in which there are no less "worthy" copies.
Trying to make the movie as realistic as possible doesn't always match the look and feel that made the originals so appealing. An example is the new "The Lion King" by Jon Favreau.
Tim Burton - no doubt a talented filmmaker - this time created a bizarre cinematic carnival in which violent characters mock a virtual animal. For this subtle story to work, viewers must believe that this huge, ridiculous creature can actually fly.
It is interesting that Dumbo is rated on KinoPoisk among 10 best movies of 2019.
5. Curse of Annabelle 3
KinoSearch: 5.91 out of 10
IMDB: 5.90 out of 10
Genre: horror, thriller, detective
Country: USA
Producer: Gary Doberman
Music: Joseph Bichara
Duration: 106 minutes
In the old days, it would have been a creepy thriller about a demonic doll that comes to life and kills people.
But since the third part of "Annabelle" is an offshoot of the "Conjuring" universe and must adhere to the mysterious rules and regulations of this franchise, then this story is about a doll that does not really come to life. She simply directs evil spirits so that the main characters can fight them. They do this not very interestingly, and the only thing that can scare the audience is the fact that only half of the film has passed.
4. Rocketman
KinoSearch: 7.03 out of 10
IMDB: 7.40 out of 10
Genre: biography, musical, drama
Country: UK, Canada, USA
Producer: Dexter Fletcher
Music: Matthew Margeson
Duration: 121 minutes
In this case, the opinion of the critic and the audience clearly does not coincide, which is evident from the high user ratings on KinoPoisk and IMDB.
Gliberman was outraged by the sloppy chronology of Elton John's career, the cliché overload, and the presentation of the musical numbers at Rocketman.
“Should we forgive all of this simply because Elton's songs are timeless?” The critic asks readers a rhetorical question.
3. Once upon a time ... in Hollywood
KinoSearch: 7.65 out of 10
IMDB: 7.90 out of 10
Genre: drama, comedy
Country: USA, UK, China
Producer: Quentin Tarantino
Music: Ennio Morricone
Duration: 161 minutes
Were you also surprised to see this film in the top ten? That's because Owen Gleeberman didn't like the idea of completely rewriting the history of Charles Manson's crimes and what they did to our collective consciousness.
This, according to the critic, is a startlingly monstrous idea, and after watching Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, he felt betrayed.
2. Christmas for two
KinoSearch: 6.96 out of 10
IMDB: 6.60 out of 10
Genre: drama, comedy, melodrama
Country: USA, UK
Producer: Paul Fig
Music: Theodore Shapiro
Duration: 103 minutes
This is a romantic comedy in which Emilia Clarke plays a single woman who looks like Bridget Jones (but without her charm), and Henry Golding is too nice and old-fashioned guy.
The script, which was written by Emma Thompson in collaboration with Greg Wise, is based on the song of the same name by the British band Wham! And if you know her, then this film has nothing to surprise you with. However, if you don't know - too.
1. Men in Black: International
KinoSearch: 5.83 out of 10
IMDB: 5.70 out of 10
Genre: fiction, action, comedy
Country: USA
Producer: F. Gary Gray
Music: Chris P. Bacon, Danny Elfman
Duration: 114 minutes
There are many words to describe the failed reboot of the once popular franchise. You could say that Men in Black: International is a boring, soulless and creatively bankrupt movie. And most importantly, it makes viewers ask two questions:
- Why does this movie exist?
- Why am I watching this?
The Men in Black series from the very beginning was a non-standard project that was kept afloat mainly by the charismatic duo of Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith. Once they were taken out of the equation, replaced by the "next generation" of hipster special agents (in this case, Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson), the audience was left alone with plot holes, flat jokes and terrifying predictability.
