The twentieth century has given us many science fiction films. They reflected the hopes, dreams and fears of society and showed interesting, but often contrived theories about what lies ahead for humanity. Some films have almost faithfully portrayed life in the 21st century, but there have been blockbusters that were completely and completely wrong in their "predictions." Here top 10 films that showed the future completely wrong.
10. Blade Runner
This is one of the best science fiction movies of the 80s. The title role is played by Harrison Ford, whose character - Rick Deckard - is an employee of the department that identifies cyborg "replicants", almost indistinguishable from people. The events of the film take place in 2019. Of course, there are still two years left before it, but it is unlikely that science and technology will step so far forward during this time to provide us with humanoid robots, flying cars and extraterrestrial colonies. It was recently announced that the film will have a sequel. Events in it will develop 30 years after the completion of the plot of the main picture. And only time will tell if in real life thirty years later there will be things like what we will see in the new Blade Runner.
9.2001: A Space Odyssey
The film, shot back in 1968, is still regarded today as one of the greatest examples of science fiction of all time. Stanley Kubrick was able to accurately portray many technologies that were futuristic at the time, but quite commonplace today. For example, a phone case looks a lot like a laptop or tablet. The reason the tape made it to this list is because we don't yet send humans to Mars, let alone Jupiter, and there certainly weren't computers as advanced as the HEL-9000 in 2001.
Interesting fact: in order to simulate the lunar surface, Kubrick ordered to import, wash and repaint several tons of sand. And the movements of astronauts, weightlessness and scenes of landing on the moon look amazingly believable in the picture. And still there are persistent rumors that in the 1970s Kubrick took part in the so-called "lunar conspiracy" - filming allegedly landing on the moon of American astronauts.
8. 2012
This movie, released in 2009, exploited fears about the ancient Maya's prediction that the history of the world would end in 2012 (their calendar ended 12/21/2012). But you are reading this text now, in 2017, which means that the prediction did not come true. However, this does not apply to the film, there the Earth's core warmed up, which led to dramatic moments: climate change, earthquakes, tectonic plate shears, tsunamis and the eruption of the super-volcano Yellowstone. Some of these events may happen separately, but they are unlikely to threaten us all together anytime soon. In fact, all the speculation about 2012 and the coming end of the world was bullshit. The Maya did not predict that the world would end on December 21, 2012. The long countdown of the Mayan calendar ended that day ... and another began. So the end of the world is postponed indefinitely.
7. Back to the Future II
Watching this film, I just want to say "Sorry, Marty, we all slept through."The 2015 movie version included hoverboards, Nike self-lacing sneakers, flying cars, and other technologies that don't exist now (although there was a limited release of Nike Air MAGS self-lacing sneakers created in honor of the film). But in "Back to the Future II" was predicted the emergence of video chats, although in reality they are not carried out on such large screens.
6. Terminator
Terminator from the first movie went to kill Sarah Connor from 2029. And later, in the movie "Terminator: May the Savior Come," it is said that the war against machines has been fought since 2018, but began long before that. Fortunately, there are currently no machines like the Terminator. However, the danger of artificial intelligence has long been the subject of heated debate, and the Terminator franchise has shown us our worst fears on the matter.
5. Time patrol
An action-packed science fiction film about a policeman (played by Jean-Claude Van Damme) that regulates the passage of time and prevents changes in the events of the past. As conceived by the scriptwriters, time travel became possible by 2004. Alas, this idea was disproved more than ten years ago. Even now, the idea of being able to travel back in time is pretty much science fiction. However, "Time Patrol" showed cars that drive without a driver and respond to voice commands, and these ideas in 2017 no longer seem fantastic. The technology of voice recognition and control with its help by various devices is constantly being improved, and also developments are underway for driving cars without human intervention. Perhaps the two technologies will ultimately be combined, leading to cars that you can simply say “go there” and enjoy a comfortable ride in the passenger seat.
4. Rollerball
The plot of the film in 2018 will be a society run by corporations, and the main entertainment will be a deadly Rollerball game full of furious tricks and special effects. Well, there is still time until 2018, but for some reason there is confidence that this fantastic film lied to us.
3. Death Race 2000
The similarity of this movie to Rollerball is that the world of the future is obsessed with a deadly sport for no good reason. Death Race 2000 was released in 1975 and depicts a society in which one of the few forms of entertainment is a bloody competition in 2000. The sport was supposed to help manage overcrowding, and drivers earned credit for driving over innocent pedestrians. Good old NASCAR is better.
2. Escape from New York
According to the scriptwriters' idea, in 1997 Manhattan became a huge maximum security prison. This idea was rather strange, but "Escape from New York" with the brilliant Kurt Russell liked the audience, and in 1996 a sequel called "Escape from Los Angeles" was released, which exploited a similar idea. That is, in 2013, Los Angeles became an autonomous island, where people disliked by the government were exiled. Well, now it's 2017 and New York is one of the largest and most beautiful cities in the world.
1. Mad Max
The events in the films "Mad Max", according to one of the interviews with George Miller, took place between the late 90s and 2018. The world has become an abandoned wasteland ruled by bandits. It is not yet clear what led to this apocalypse, due to which radioactive fallout began to fall and the climate changed dramatically. However, it is very good that this film lied to us and so far everything is in order with the Earth.
